Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins (立体忍者活劇 天誅 弐 Rittai Ninja Katsugeki: Tenchū Ni?)is the second installment in the "Tenchu" series and serves as a prequel to the first game, "Tenchu: Stealth Assassins," placing it chronologically before the events of the first game. In this game, players experience the characters Rikimaru and Ayame as teenagers under the tutelage of their elderly master, Shiunsai, and another Azuma ninja named Tatsumaru. Additionally, the game provides insights into the origins of Rikimaru's iconic scar over his right eye.

Story[]

Please note that the following description pertains to the North American English version of the second game in the Tenchu game series for the original PlayStation. This installment serves as a prequel to the first game. Unlike its predecessor, this game places a stronger emphasis on its plot, with the storyline being divided among the three main characters. The summary provided below offers an overview of the combined plotlines from these three unique campaigns.

Tenchu 2 characters

The main characters of the game(from left to right) Rikimaru, Ayame, Tatsumaru, and the main adversary Lady Kagami.

Prologue

It is the age of the warring states. The old shogun has fallen, and samurai warlords fight savage battles for the right to hoist their flags over the great castles of Japan. But far from the battlefield, unseen and unheard, a different bread of warriors ply their deadly trade. Born in shadow, they will die as shadows. They are the ninja.” -Tenchu 2 Narration

The tale commences within the confines of the Azuma Ninja village. Two budding ninjas, Rikimaru and Ayame, have matured into young adults, rendering them eligible to undergo the ultimate test of their ninja prowess. Following rigorous training within the village, they return to their mentor, Azuma Shiunsai, and beseech him to evaluate their skills. Subsequently, they are lowered into the clandestine subterranean passage. Once each ninja successfully locates the exit, they are met by Master Shiunsai and entrusted with their inaugural mission.

Their task is straightforward: a coalition of thieves and bandits has formed an unholy alliance to prey upon local farmers. Rikimaru is dispatched first to eliminate the cunning thieves and their leader during the daylight hours when they are at their most vulnerable, and the highwaymen are otherwise occupied. Ayame, on the other hand, is entrusted with the second mission – the eradication of the bandits under the cloak of the night after their arrival to discover their comrades' demise.

Act 1 – The Red Lotus

The senior Lord Gohda’s death launched a vicious struggle for power, a series of battles and betrayals worse than any in Japan’s blood stained history. How? Lord Gohda left all the power and glory of his title, the riches of his empire, to his son Matsunoshin. But Lord Gohda’s brother, a man named Motohide, believed himself to be the empire’s rightful heir. Motohide was able to bribe certain samurai to his side, and immerse the empire in civil war. Gohda family advisor, Sekiya Naotada, responded the only way he could; he called for the Azuma Ninja.” - Tenchu 2 Narration

The narrative commences within the Azuma Ninja village, where three young ninjas, Tatsumaru, Rikimaru, and Ayame, are summoned by their venerable master, Azuma Shiunsai. Master Shiunsai apprises them of the dire situation at Gohda Castle, besieged by his own Lord's Uncle, Gohda Motohide, and he issues a paramount directive: to safeguard their Lord, Gohda Matsunoshin. Accompanying his orders, Shiunsai bequeaths the ancestral sword of the clan, Izayoi, to Tatsumaru, thereby elevating him to a higher rank.

The trio arrives at Gohda Castle to discover it overrun by Motohide's troops and enemy ninja. Amid the chaos, Ayame is entrusted with the mission to rescue Lady Kei and Princess Kiku. At the same time, Rikimaru joins Tatsumaru in the search for Lord Gohda Matsunoshin. While in pursuit of their objectives, Tatsumaru becomes entangled in a confrontation with an enemy ninja scaling the castle walls. He orders Rikimaru to continue the rescue mission while he investigates the intruder.

During his investigation, Tatsumaru encounters a formidable woman performing a saber dance atop one of the castle towers. This woman introduces herself as Lady Kagami, the master of the Nyogetsu Ninja Clan, known rivals of the Azuma Clan under the rule of Lord Yoshisada Toda. Tatsumaru recognizes both the clan and Lady Kagami's reputation, and she acknowledges his new rank and sword. Lady Kagami extends an invitation for Tatsumaru to join her Ninja Clan, aspiring to rise above the warring samurai and gain autonomy from their control. However, Tatsumaru firmly declines the offer, prompting Lady Kagami to depart, leaving Tatsumaru to contend with one of her lieutenants, Seiryu the Blue Dragon. Tatsumaru ultimately prevails in this confrontation.

Simultaneously, Rikimaru scours the blazing halls of Gohda Castle and chances upon a duel between Gohda Motohide and the newly appointed Lord Gohda Matsunoshin. A fierce argument ensues, with Motohide contending that Lord Gohda is insufficiently robust to lead. Gohda disagrees and gains the upper hand in their duel, disarming Motohide. However, instead of dealing with the final blow, Gohda lowers his sword. Seizing the opportunity, Motohide draws a flintlock pistol and shoots Lord Gohda. Rikimaru intervenes to confront Motohide, who is disarmed once again. In a surprising turn of events, Lord Gohda steps between Rikimaru's blade and Motohide's defenseless form, taking Rikimaru's strike across his back. Motohide escapes, leaving Rikimaru to confront the aftermath. Gohda, severely wounded, becomes the unintended recipient of Rikimaru's apology.

Jubei Tachibana, Lord Gohda's sword master, urges Rikimaru and his comrades to flee through a concealed exit, revealing that Motohide is now on the hunt for Lady Kei and Princess Kiku. Lord Gohda obliges and departs upon learning of the rescue mission undertaken on his behalf.

Ayame, determined to locate Lady Kei and Princess Kiku, arrives too late to save them from Motohide. The treacherous Lord not only wounded Gohda but also kidnapped Princess Kiku. In a heart-wrenching encounter, Lady Kei succumbs to her injuries, passing on a pair of bells to Ayame. She entrusts Ayame with the care of Princess Kiku, uttering her final words: "My Ayame... a ninja..." as she breathes her last. Ayame, burdened by grief and responsibility, rushes to find Princess Kiku.

Tatsumaru eventually stumbles upon Ayame and Lady Kei, who brief him on the tragic events that have unfolded. In haste, Ayame rushes to locate Princess Kiku, leaving Tatsumaru to report Lady Kei's demise and Princess Kiku's abduction to Naotada Sekiya. Their discussion reveals that Motohide has betrayed Gohda, opting to side with their rival, Lord Toda, and assemble troops at the province's border. This treacherous act exposes Motohide's intention to seize Gohda's territory. Tatsumaru, Rikimaru, and Ayame all realize that Motohide's actions have set the stage for conflict.

Lord Gohda, gazing upon the castle in flames and overwhelmed by remorse, is joined by Naotada Sekiya, who arrives on horseback bearing news of his wife and daughter's plight and the impending border conflict. Gohda, consumed by guilt, blames himself for the dire circumstances. Rikimaru, observing his Lord's anguish, offers to assassinate Motohide.

Simultaneously, Ayame infiltrates Toda's war camp, where she covertly spies on Motohide's last meeting with Lord Toda. Motohide divulges his malevolent deeds, including the injury to Lord Gohda and the abduction of Princess Kiku, beseeching Toda for additional troops, but his plea is rebuffed. Toda, viewing this as an opportunity to seize Gohda's small empire, callously dispatches Motohide, remarking, "The wine of victory is sweeter when you don't have to share it." Ayame intervenes as the guard accompanying Princess Kiku, only to be confronted by Lady Kagami. Ayame's presence is disregarded as Kagami departs, leaving Ayame to search the camp for the kidnapped princess.

Meanwhile, Tatsumaru infiltrates the camp and endeavors to assassinate Lord Toda. Toda summons two guards, but Tatsumaru swiftly dispatches them. Ayame eventually locates Princess Kiku, who tearfully longs for her mother. Ayame presents her with the bells entrusted to her by Lady Kei, bringing solace to the grieving princess.

Lastly, Rikimaru arrives at Toda's war tent, where he stumbles upon the lifeless bodies of both lords and their men. Upon investigating, Rikimaru stumbles upon a confrontation between Tatsumaru and Lady Kagami, culminating in both combatants plummeting into the sea after a rocky cliff crumbles beneath them. Both wash ashore, leading to a final duel between Tatsumaru, weakened and bereft of memory and Lady Kagami, an enigmatic figure cloaked in mystery.

Act 2 – The Shifting Sands

After falling into the turbulent seas, Tatsumaru was saved by Kagami, the very enemy he sought to kill. After two months of tender care at the hands of Kagami’s Servants, His body fully recovered, but his memory did not. And so, with no recollection of his previous existence, he begins a new life as one of the Lords of the Burning Dawn.” -Tenchu 2 Narration

Lady Kagami brings Tatsumaru to the headquarters of the Burning Dawn, where she proclaims him as her newest lieutenant, replacing Seiryu. The other three Lords accept this transition. Kagami assigns him a mission to capture more individuals to serve as enslaved people on a project known as the "Fire Demon" while providing him with the mask of the Blue Dragon. She emphasizes the significance of prioritizing "the dream" of freedom from the shogun.

"Three months have passed. Gohda Castle was saved by a well-timed rain shower, just as the Azuma Ninja saved the house of Gohda. While loyal subjects repair the castle, Lord Gohda recovers from his wounds in the Azuma Ninja Village. All seems well, but the village's heart is heavy, for there has been no news of Tatsumaru." - Narration from Tenchu 2

Lord Gohda entrusts Ayame with a mission to rescue civilian villagers who are being transported to a deserted island. Simultaneously, Rikimaru embarks on a separate mission to a high-mountain village where demons terrorize the inhabitants.

Ayame swims to the deserted island and discovers it heavily guarded. Chinese pirates are unloading a group of villagers from a boat onto the island. Ayame intervenes in this perilous situation.

Rikimaru arrives at the high-mountain village and witnesses a man being mistreated by one of the mountain demons. He ascends the mountain, only to encounter humanoid demons plaguing the area. Rikimaru locates the villagers and liberates them, but their moment of relief is shattered when Kamadoma, a demon allied with the Burning Dawn, kills one of the villagers for attempting to provide Rikimaru with information. This infuriates Rikimaru, who labels Kamadoma a murderer. A confrontation ensues, and Rikimaru ultimately prevails, slaying Kamadoma. One of the dying villagers offers Rikimaru a map to the "Secret Harbor."

Ayame continues her exploration of the island and discovers a small prison at its summit. There, she sets the villagers free but is confronted by Wang Dahai, the leader of the Chinese pirates and slavers. Ayame triumphs in her battle against him and is subsequently confronted by Genbu, the man she spared during the castle fire. Genbu extends an invitation to join the Burning Dawn, expounding on "the dream" and their master, Lady Kagami. Ayame, however, remains unconvinced by his entreaties.

Upon Seiryu's (Tatsumaru) return to the Burning Dawn's base, Lady Kagami informs him of the Azuma ninja's discovery of the secret harbor. She dispatches him to the harbor with orders to protect the enslaved people laboring on "The Fire Demon." Meanwhile, Rikimaru reaches the harbor to find it overrun by the same Chinese slavers that Ayame had previously encountered. As he fights his way through, he liberates additional captives being held on a Chinese Junk. However, his efforts lead to a confrontation with Wang Xiaohai. Just as Rikimaru defeats the Chinese pirate, another silent intruder, Seiryu (Tatsumaru), appears on the scene. Tatsumaru eliminates any soldiers near the harbor before facing the elderly samurai Urano Takehito on the deck of the Chinese Junk. Rikimaru emerges victorious in his duel with the Chinese pirate, Wang Xiaohai, and reacts swiftly to the arrival of Seiryu (Tatsumaru). Tatsumaru draws his sword, but Rikimaru recognizes the blade and Tatsumaru's identity. Seiryu removes his mask, revealing himself as Tatsumaru, although he has no recollection of his past with the Azuma clan. Rikimaru expresses relief at Tatsumaru's survival but is met with Tatsumaru's denial of his former identity. Tatsumaru introduces himself as Seiryu, one of the four lords of the Burning Dawn, and rebuffs Rikimaru's attempts at reconciliation before making his escape.

Rikimaru returns to the Azuma Village and conveys the gathered information to Master Shiunsai. The actual reason behind Tatsumaru's betrayal remains unknown, but there are suspicions that Tatsumaru may have genuinely lost his memory. Lord Gohda interrupts the meeting to report an attack on the temple by a group known as "The Burning Dawn." Both Shiunsai and Lord Gohda assign Rikimaru to undertake this mission.

Upon Tatsumaru's return to Lady Kagami, she instructs him to eliminate the inhabitants of Gohda's secret Quarantine Village, which the clan had forcefully isolated to contain diseases. In response to this revelation, Lord Gohda dispatches Ayame to monitor the village.

Rikimaru arrives at the temple and encounters Suzaku, the red sparrow, who springs a trap. As a result, Rikimaru is compelled to engage in a duel with Suzaku's partner, Yukihotaru, the ice firefly and kunoichi of the Burning Dawn. Suzaku intervenes and fatally stabs Yukihotaru in the throat, citing his disdain for weakness. Rikimaru inquires about Tatsumaru's transformation. However, Suzaku only alludes to Tatsumaru's choice to break free from his past, further mystifying Rikimaru. Suzaku subsequently escapes when Rikimaru receives word, via carrier pigeon, of an attack on the Azuma Village.

Ayame arrives at the Secret Village only to discover it conquered by an enemy ninja, with its inhabitants slaughtered by Tatsumaru. Tatsumaru converses with Lady Kagami, who orders him to incinerate the Azuma Village. Ayame, witnessing this, approaches Tatsumaru. However, Tatsumaru remains amnesic and bewildered by Ayame's happiness. She attempts to communicate with him, but he ignores her and departs. As Ayame follows him, she encounters and dispatches the Slug, the Frog, and the Snake. She then receives a message via carrier pigeon indicating that the village is under attack.

Rikimaru returns to the village to find the Burning Dawn members massacring the village elders. Initially, he reproaches Kagami for her lack of morals. Nevertheless, she remains resolute and claims to have mastered her emotions despite evidence to the contrary in Tatsumaru's story. Rikimaru combats a horde of enemy ninjas before encountering Master Shiunsai and Lord Gohda locked in battle with enemy ninjas in Shiunsai's house. They instruct Rikimaru to assist the village further.

Tatsumaru locates Master Shiunsai and Lord Gohda within the house, striking Lord Gohda with a powerful punch that renders him unconscious. Subsequently, Tatsumaru duels Master Shiunsai and emerges victorious. After Shiunsai's demise, Tatsumaru experiences guilt and sorrow, although his memories remain elusive. Rikimaru returns and encounters Tatsumaru standing over the lifeless bodies of Shiunsai and Gohda. The two engage in a duel, with Rikimaru seeking vengeance for his master. Rikimaru initially gains the upper hand but is ultimately disarmed by Tatsumaru, who then inflicts Rikimaru with his iconic eye scar with a swift upward slash. Rikimaru leaps away, finding himself positioned between Tatsumaru and Lady Kagami. Lady Kagami delivers a lecture about emotional mastery before departing with Tatsumaru. Ayame returns in time to witness the village's devastation, narrowly avoiding the escaping Tatsumaru and Lady Kagami and finding a wounded Rikimaru mourning over their dying master. In his final moments, Master Shiunsai instructs Rikimaru to recover the clan's ancestral sword and to master his emotions. Lord Gohda returns to the castle, and Rikimaru embarks on the hunt for Tatsumaru with the assistance of the village dog, Semimaru.

Ayame follows Tatsumaru and Lady Kagami to a hill some distance from the village. The two begin a conversation beneath a cherry blossom tree until Ayame's arrival interrupts them. Ayame questions Tatsumaru's allegiance to the "pack of losers." Lady Kagami starts to respond but is halted by Tatsumaru. He points out her susceptibility to provocation and momentary abandonment of "the dream" in the face of emotions. Lady Kagami relents and leaves Tatsumaru to deal with Ayame, who seeks answers and clarification regarding Tatsumaru's role in Master Shiunsai's death.

Finally, Tatsumaru experiences a vision of Ayame as a young child, triggering the return of his memories, including those of his past life and friends. Initially relieved, Ayame approaches him with joy, but Tatsumaru forcefully pushes her away, asserting that their separation is necessary. He sternly warns her that he will kill her if they ever meet again.

Rikimaru encounters Ayame beneath the cherry blossom tree and reveals his intention to kill Tatsumaru. In response, Ayame asserts her determination to kill Tatsumaru, surprising Rikimaru. He concludes that although her choice may be selfless, she has yet to master her emotions.

Together, they follow Semimaru to a bamboo forest, where a significant faction of the Burning Dawn awaits them. Navigating through the trees, they confront Byakko, the White Tiger, the fourth lord of the Burning Dawn. Byakko opts to duel Rikimaru and deploys his own white Tiger, Chiro, against Ayame and Semimaru. Remarkably, the two young ninjas survive the ordeal and proceed more profoundly into a nearby cave used as the Burning Dawn's secret base.

Rikimaru and Ayame explore the caves, battling their way through the Burning Dawn members. Eventually, they stumble upon the ongoing construction of a massive, heavily armed warship. Observing the ship's development, Tatsumaru and Lady Kagami are interrupted by one of their ninja scouts, who alerts Kagami to intruders in the caves. Kagami orders the scout to prepare for an immediate launch of the ship, targeting Gohda Castle. She asserts that Gohda Castle is the final obstacle standing in the way of their freedom. Tatsumaru and Lady Kagami board The Fire Demon, while Rikimaru departs to inform Gohda and the others at the castle. Ayame agrees to stay on the ship with the enemy ninja as it is launched. After blasting a massive hole in the cliffside, the floating fortress emerges into the night, armed to assail the castle.

Act 3 – Solitude

After running day and night, Rikimaru reaches Gohda Castle, before The Fire Demon. Lord Gohda calls an emergency meeting of the nobles of the House of Gohda.”… “Lady Kagami sails her massive war ship, Fire Demon, toward Gohda Castle. The floating Fortes’ great cannon, Fire Ball, gleams darkly in the moonlight, as it takes aim at Gohda Castle.” - Tenchu 2 Narration

As the ship draws near the castle, it fires a devastating shot into one of the towers, resulting in injuries to many of the servants.

Amidst the ensuing panic, Lord Gohda declares his intention to lead the counterattack. Witnessing the damage wrought by the ship, Ayame makes a solemn vow to protect Kiku, whom she regards as her "sister."

On one of the platforms of the Fire Demon, Kagami remarks to Tatsumaru that the new Lord Gohda is displaying unexpected bravery in the face of the attack. Tatsumaru notes that both Rikimaru and Ayame are likely to arrive soon. Hearing their names, Kagami realizes that Tatsumaru has regained his memory. She questions why he returned, and in essence, he conveys that even with his memories restored, he still believes in the worthiness of Kagami's dream, even if it means sacrificing his life. When Tatsumaru attempts to leave, Kagami restrains him and confesses her love. He bids her farewell and rushes to confront Lord Gohda's troops.

Ayame searches the inner ship for an escape route, dispatching enemy ninjas along the way. When she finds the door leading to the main deck, she encounters Genbu guarding it. Ayame insists that Kagami and her "dream" are not worth protecting. However, Genbu reveals that he safeguards Kagami and the dream because she treats him with respect, and he yearns for a world where he is not treated as a "big dumb oaf." Sensing an impasse, Ayame engages Genbu in a deadly battle to protect the people of Gohda Castle. Ayame emerges victorious but mourns Genbu's death, as he had revealed himself to be more than a "big dumb oaf" before their duel. He was "Genbu the wise, Lord of the Burning Dawn" - according to Ayame.

Meanwhile, Rikimaru swims and moves between ships until he is close enough to the Fire Demon. He encounters Suzaku on the deck of one of the larger side vessels, with Suzaku reveling in the chaos surrounding the ship. They engage in a battle, and when Rikimaru prevails, Suzaku claims victory, asserting that Rikimaru will eventually become as ruthless and selfish as him. Rikimaru, at last, masters his emotions and refuses to fall for this manipulation. He regains his composure and tells the dying Suzaku, "I fight because I must."

Simultaneously, Tatsumaru crosses paths with Jubei Tachibana. Tatsumaru emerges as the victor and waits for the approaching ninja on one end of the ship. Ayame is the first to reach him, and despite his earlier promise to kill her, she confronts him with her Kodachi at the ready. In their ensuing duel, they discover themselves evenly matched, disarming each other and pushing one another back. Ayame rises first, and she finds the ancestral sword, Izayoi, nearby. She rushes over to Tatsumaru, holding him at swordpoint. To her astonishment, Tatsumaru grasps the blade and plunges it into his abdomen, asserting that "unforgivable crimes must be punished."

When Rikimaru finds Ayame standing beside the mortally wounded Tatsumaru, she tosses him the sword before he departs to end the war, leaving Ayame in shock and tears. Rikimaru confronts Kagami, who is performing a fan dance. She inquires, "Will you really put an end to my beautiful dream?" Rikimaru responds, "You killed the beauty of your dream with the ugliness of your methods."

Ayame contemplates suicide and allows herself to fall from the ship. Rikimaru ultimately defeats Kagami. In their final exchange, Kagami asserts that her dream will endure despite individuals like Rikimaru. He declares that he will "proudly suffer the title of fool" if it means preventing further bloodshed. Kagami crawls to lie beside Tatsumaru, and Gohda's troops set fire to the ship, leading to its eventual explosion due to the inferno. Ayame, positioned on a substantial piece of debris from the ship, decides to live, motivated by her "sister" and a promise she made.

Rikimaru and Ayame return to the cliff, where they witnessed Tatsumaru's fall. They mutually agree to go back to Gohda Castle, with Rikimaru fighting for honor and Ayame protecting her family. This choice sets the stage for their personalities in the first Tenchu game, Tenchu: Stealth Assassins.

Following the credits, Suzaku is depicted as coming back to life on the burning ship where he met his demise. He removes his blindfold, revealing his true identity as Onikage.
