The Manji Cult (卍教 Manji-kyō?) is a strange creed that had a magic stone that could turn ordinary men into possessed servants.
The Manji were headed by a mysterious woman named On (怨), who had at some point come upon an ancient stone that contained the spirit of a demon. The stone could be used to brainwash and physically mutate people into mindless servants. On took advantage of this arcane power and began building an army of hellish demon-human hybrids, though she also employed regular humans as followers as well. The Manji then began attacking religious temples and taking them for their own, either killing or turning the monks who had been there originally. Upon learning of this, Lord Gohda dispatched an Azuma ninja to deal with the cult.
The ninja infiltrated the Manji headquarters, a Buddhist-like monastery named Kin'ou-ji (金王寺). After eliminating several Manji monks (卍僧) and Manji cultists along the way, the assassin at last located the heart of the temple and was faced with On herself. On revealed that she had swallowed the stone to prevent anyone from taking it and then proceeded to duel the Azuma. The assassin quickly killed the her and then gutted her body and took the stone to break the Manji's power.
It is unknown was happened to the cult after this event, but considering that it's leader was dead and the stone taken, it is reasonable to assume that it was disbanded. It is very likely that the cult was affiliated with Mei-Oh, as Onikage was visiting On at the time of her death. On also gave some of her cultists to Mei-Oh for his own personal army.
- The swastika is a religious symbol in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. In Japanese language it can be written 万字, 卍字, 卍 or 卐. In Buddhism, swastika could represent infinity; as a matter of fact the word manji (or wànzì in Mandarin Chinese) literally means "10,000 character", and figuratively "totality character" or "eternity character".
